About Hampshire County Council
Our business is quite simply about providing the people of Hampshire with the right services, in the right place, at the right time and representing good value for money. However, our community's needs and expectations are constantly changing. As a County Council, it's therefore vital we keep pace with these changes and remain focused whilst continually evolving and improving our business. After all, we want to be in the best possible shape to deliver today whilst planning for, and investing in, the future.
It's our responsibility to lead for Hampshire. Providing a truly diverse range of services for our residents means that we work closely with partners and communities. In fact, we regularly ask the community what improvements they want to see and what their priorities are.
But excellent isn't good enough for us and we know that our services can develop further. In order to keep continually improving, we've responded and reviewed the focus for our organisation and have now developed a set of three priorities:
- Hampshire safer and more secure for all
- Maximising wellbeing
- Enhancing our quality of place
Looking after Hampshire, our job is to ensure the county is safe and secure and to work towards enhancing the County's quality of place. The Environment Department's mission is to move and shape Hampshire, leading on the place shaping agenda for the County.
About Hampshire’s Highways and Transport Department
Hampshire’s Highways and Transport Service sits within our Environment Department. The Environment Department works to move and shape Hampshire, including serving our 1.2 million residents, maintaining quality of life and managing our superb environment. This combines both urban and rural settings, as well as 8,500km of roads – enough to take you on a journey to Senegal and back.
The Highways and Transport Service is charged with looking after the highways network in Hampshire on behalf of the public. This means maintaining its condition, ensuring that the highways are safe and that the public can use them without obstruction.
Working with our partners Amey we are responsible for all highways in Hampshire except:
- motorways and trunk roads which are the responsibility of the Highways Agency
- roads in Southampton which are the responsibility of Southampton City Council
- roads in Portsmouth which are the responsibility of Portsmouth City Council
Recent projects
- The £7.1 million South Winchester Park and Ride Scheme is due to begin operations on 19 April 2010
- A new £20 million busway as the first phase of a bus rapid transit system in South East Hampshire
- The paving and reconstruction of Winchester High Street
The Lab
Highways and Transport is proud to still make good use of our own Laboratory. Here, key research is carried out such as the testing of core samples, and measuring grip and skid distances on the network.
